Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal was likely the most famous mother watching children’s performances Thursday (April 29) at the 2010 New Orleans Jazz Fest presented by Shell.

Gyllenhaal, whose work in the 2009 film “Crazy Heart” earned her an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress, heard music by Seva Venet and the Wilson Charter School band at the Chouest Family Kids’ Tent with her 3-year-old daughter, Ramona.

The 32-year-old said she was in the city for her first Jazz Fest. Her husband, actor Peter Sarsgaard, is also in town filming scenes for “The Green Lantern,” in which he was cast to play villain Dr. Hector Hammond.

“Everyone here has been great,” Gyllenhaal said of her experience with tens of thousands of other Jazz Fest revelers. “The food, the music, it’s all been so good.”

Ramona held her mother’s hand as she danced to several of the Wilson Charter School band’s tunes. On what the festival dubbed “Kids Day,” a group of people sat in folding chairs to their right, and a group of young women sat to their left. No one seemed to take notice of Gyllenhaal, who wore sunglasses and a large sunhat.

According to Gyllenhaal, who said she also spent last weekend at the Fair Grounds, it was actually the children’s tent that produced her family’s favorite show: Kai Knight’s Dance Academy on Sunday.

She said the recital was “very sweet. My daughter got all into it. Both my husband and I were crying.”

On Gyllenhaal’s plate for Friday (April 30) is Elvis Perkins in Dearland at 4:20 p.m. at the New Orleans Fais Do-Do Stage. She described folk-rocker Perkins as a “friend.”

When Venet and the Wilson band finished their set, Gyllenhaal was the first to applaud. She walked Ramona over to a nearby tent, and together they started working on a painting with another child and her mother.

Gyllenhaal has amassed more than 30 film credits. She is well known for her roles in “The Dark Knight,” “SherryBaby” and “Secretary.”

Six weeks after winning an Oscar, Jeff Bridges picked up another accolade for “Crazy Heart” on Thursday night as he and costar Maggie Gyllenhaal were bestowed Prism Awards, which honor actors, movies and TV shows that “accurately depict and bring attention to substance abuse and mental health issues.”

Crazy Heart,” the story of an alcoholic singer, also won the award in the substance use category for feature films, while ” The Soloist,” in which Jamie Foxx portrayed a street musician battling paranoid schizophrenia, was honored for its depiction of mental health issues.

Television series winners included NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” NBC’s “Law & Order,” AMC’s ” Breaking Bad” and CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother.”

Two TV movies on Lifetime, “Natalee Holloway” and “Prayers for Bobby,” also collected awards, and a third Lifetime movie, “America,” earned performance honors for Rosie O’Donnell.

Among other programs picking up awards were Nickelodeon’s “Nick News With Linda Ellerbee” for an installment called “Kids in Rehab,” PBS’ ” Betty Ford: The Real Deal” and HBO’s “The Alzheimer’s Project.”

The Prisms, established in 1997, were presented at the Beverly Hills Hotel by the Entertainment Industries Council in association with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the FX network, which will televise the ceremony in the fall.

“Through accurate character portrayals and inspired storytelling, our industry reinforces the importance of those individuals within the care-giving and health fields,” said Brian Dyak, president of the Entertainment Industries Council.?
