Maggie Gyllenhaal is in negotiations to star in a film about how the vibrator caused a buzz.

The actress,  who was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for her role opposite Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart, hopes to be in the film Hysteria, which will be set in Victorian-era England and shot on locations in London and Luxembourg.

Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Dancy and Rupert Everett are also in talks to star in the film, which Tanya Wexler will direct.

The screenplay, by Jonah Lisa Dyer, Stephen Dyer and Howard Gensler, is based on fact.

In the mid-19th century, some doctors claimed many women suffered from what they diagnosed as hysteria, which could mean anything from irritability, anger or lack of sleep. But only women, they claimed, could get ‘it’.

Doctors treated their patients with a manual pelvic massage. eventually, in the 1870s, a clockwork, then an electrical, device was created to do the calming job.

I saw a play in New York last year called in The Next Room (or The Vibrator Play), by Sarah Ruhl (although the film is not based on the play), and a doctor character in it said the hysteria was all to do with ‘congestion in your womb’.

It was actually quite fascinating and i find it interesting this film is going to explore similar territory.

Certainly, it’s different from the scatty mother Maggie played in the wonderful Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang Returns film.

Maggie really grooves living in London when either she or her partner Peter Sarsgaard work here.

They did so when he was filming an education and she made Nanny McPhee and The Dark Knight.

IN Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, Oscar-winning actress and screenwriter Emma Thompson (Nanny McPhee, Sense and Sensibility) returns to the role of the magical nanny who appears when she’s needed the most and wanted the least.

A Working Title film, Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang is released on DVD and as a DVD/Blu-ray double-pack on July 19 from Universal Pictures UK.

In the latest instalment, Nanny McPhee appears at the door of harried young mother Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal; The Dark Knight, Crazy Heart), who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war.

But once she’s arrived, Nanny McPhee discovers that Mrs Green’s children are fighting a war of their own against two spoiled city cousins who have just moved in and refuse to leave.

Relying on everything from a flying motorcycle and a statue that comes to life to a tree-climbing piglet and a baby elephant who turns up in the oddest places, Nanny McPhee uses her magic to teach her mischievous charges five new lessons.

Joining Thompson and Gyllenhaal for the project are Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, The Boat That Rocked), as Mrs Green’s brother-in-law, Phil; Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) as Mrs Green’s eldest son, Norman; and Dame Maggie Smith (Becoming Jane, Harry Potter series) as the somewhat befuddled Mrs. Docherty.

The family comedy was written by Emma Thompson, directed by Bafta winner Susanna White (Bleak House, Generation Kill, Jane Eyre), Nanny McPhee and based on characters in Christianna Brand’s Nurse Matilda books.

Special Features (DVD & Blu-ray): Audio commentary with director Susanna White; deleted scenes; featurettes: New Film, New Story, Magical Moves, Mr Edelweiss, Emma Thompson Becomes Nanny McPhee, The Pigs, The Mud.
