“Three Sisters,” a drama by Anton Chekhov, is shaping up to be one of the starrier stage productions planned for the depth of winter in New York.

Classic Stage Company, the New York theater that is producing the play, is finishing up casting before rehearsals are scheduled to begin in early December. Previously announced cast members include husband-and-wife Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhaal as illicit lovers Vershinin and Masha. On Friday, CSC announced that Jessica Hecht, fresh off her turn as a daffy urologist on HBO’s “Bored to Death,” will play eldest sister Olga.

Brian Kulick, CSC’s artistic director, said he planned the play around the holidays because many TV shows and movies wouldn’t be filming then.

Kulick said Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard committed to the production based partly on that mid-winter timing. “They said, ‘Let’s just say we’re going to do it and everyone hold your breath and cross your fingers nothing comes up,’ and I’m knocking on wood as I’m speaking to you right now,” he said.

Gyllenhaal is currently in England wrapping up “Hysteria,” a movie about the modern vibrator. Sarsgaard is awaiting the June release of his next film, “Green Lantern.”

“Three Sisters,” set to run from Jan. 12 through Feb. 20, reunites the team behind “Uncle Vanya,” which ran at CSC last year to mixed reviews. Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard starred in that production, directed by Austin Pendleton, who is returning to helm “Three Sisters.” Another “Uncle Vanya” cast member, Mamie Gummer, was set to play Irina in “Three Sisters” but withdrew amid a scheduling conflict with an upcoming ABC series.

Earlier this year, stage veteran Hecht played opposite Scarlett Johansson in Broadway’s “A View from the Bridge.” Both were nominated for supporting actress Tony Awards; Ms. Johansson won.

Hollywood star Maggie Gyllenhaal has opened a village for orphaned and abandoned children in India.

The Crazy Heart actress, along with her actor husband, Peter Sarsgaard, is an ambassador for the village.

Gyllenhaal says she was overwhelmed by the response they received when they visited.

“I’ve never been greeted like this by anyone, I’ve never seen anything like this,” exclaimed Gyllenhaal.

“I tired not to have any expectations… I have never been to India before so I didn’t know what to expect.

“It’s exceeded anything I could have imagined.”

The couple were given a tour of the village and met the families living there before they were treated to a traditional dance at a dedication ceremony.

The SOS Children’s Village in Alibaug in northeast India has been built in partnership with lifestyle brand Esprit.

It will accommodate 140 children, who will live in small groups in individual family houses and go to a nearby school.

Without the initiative many of the children would have had to live and work on the streets of India.

Sarsgaard is optimistic the village will change the lives of those who live there.

“Everyone involved really believes in what they are doing. There is a real sense that this is different… the way everyone reacts and participates is ideal.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal was absolute lovely on The Graham Norton Show yesterday, where she talked about her upcoming movie Hysteria, being nominated for an oscar and dancing with Madonna. But she also shared some funny stories about her father (Stephen Gyllenhaal) and shot the rumours about her having had plastic surgery to the grown. Overall a wonderful, funny and cute interview!

The BBC didn’t have to look far for a presenter to fill Jonathan Ross’s shoes. All it took was a quick shuffle of the schedules, cross out the word “Monday”, replace it with “Friday” and Hey Presto! The Graham Norton Show is all good to go.

We predict his move to the coveted Friday night throne will be sparkling and seamless as the new King Of Chat welcomes Charlotte Church, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and comedian Russell Howard (whose own new series started on BBC3 last night).

The irony of the risque host being turned into the BBC’s safe pair of hands in the wake of the Sachsgate fiasco won’t be lost on Norton and we’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t milk this for a bit of comedy mileage.

At least, it should be a nice change for female guests not to be leered at.

The Graham Norton Show will air tonight, 10.35pm on BBC One.
