The Oscar nominee will star ‘The Honourable Woman,’ an eight-episode political thriller

Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal will headline an upcoming Sundance Channel miniseries, The Honourable Woman.

The eight-part miniseries, set to premiere in 2014, is a complex thriller with international political overtones. Hugo Blick (The Shadow Line) is the writer and director.

Gyllenhaal, appearing this weekend on the big screen in White House Down, will play Nessa Stein, who witnessed the assassination of her father, a Zionist arms procurer, as a child. As an adult, she shifts his company’s focus from supplying arms to laying data-cabling networks between Israel and the West Bank.

Her appointment to the House of Lords, apparently due to her promotion of reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians, creates a political storm.

“I couldn’t put the scripts down,” Gyllenhaal says in a statement accompanying the announcement. “Nessa is such an exciting and intricate character. I can’t wait to begin filming.”

Sundance Channel president Sarah Barnett calls Honourable Woman “scintillating drama: It is both a tightly plotted international political thriller and a superbly wrought character piece about hope, compromise, guilt and families.”

In addition to its U.S. run on Sundance Channel, Honourable Woman will be broadcast on BBC Two in the United Kingdom next year. Sundance Channel has signed a co-production deal with BBC Worldwide, North America, for the miniseries.
