Maggie Gyllenhaal is in negotiations to star in a film about how the vibrator caused a buzz.

The actress,  who was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for her role opposite Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart, hopes to be in the film Hysteria, which will be set in Victorian-era England and shot on locations in London and Luxembourg.

Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Dancy and Rupert Everett are also in talks to star in the film, which Tanya Wexler will direct.

The screenplay, by Jonah Lisa Dyer, Stephen Dyer and Howard Gensler, is based on fact.

In the mid-19th century, some doctors claimed many women suffered from what they diagnosed as hysteria, which could mean anything from irritability, anger or lack of sleep. But only women, they claimed, could get ‘it’.

Doctors treated their patients with a manual pelvic massage. eventually, in the 1870s, a clockwork, then an electrical, device was created to do the calming job.

I saw a play in New York last year called in The Next Room (or The Vibrator Play), by Sarah Ruhl (although the film is not based on the play), and a doctor character in it said the hysteria was all to do with ‘congestion in your womb’.

It was actually quite fascinating and i find it interesting this film is going to explore similar territory.

Certainly, it’s different from the scatty mother Maggie played in the wonderful Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang Returns film.

Maggie really grooves living in London when either she or her partner Peter Sarsgaard work here.

They did so when he was filming an education and she made Nanny McPhee and The Dark Knight.
