Hollywood couple Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard put their relationship to the test to shoot new movie “High Falls” because they had to be horrible to one another. The engaged couple, who recently celebrated the birth of baby daughter Ramona, really disliked each other’s character on the set of the Sundance Film Festival-bound short film, in which they play a husband and wife.

Gyllenhaal explains, “It was actually pretty horrible, to be honest. He was playing a big jerk and it was hard for me to be around him when all day long. We were in a terrible relationship in the movie, and it was really sad to have to pretend to be in that relationship for four days.

“I love his acting and I would love to make many movies with him but I want to make sure that the making of the movie will be good for us, because I’m not sure that the making of High Falls was good for us.”

Sadly Maggie didn’t take home the Golden Globe, but it went to another terrific actress, Helen Mirren for ‘The Queen’. I’ll have some photos and videos coming up soon, but for now here is a little tibbit from the The Associated Press:

With a new baby, a best-actress Golden Globe nomination for “Sherrybaby” and a slew of films coming out, Maggie Gyllenhaal was radiant on the red carpet with her fiance, Peter Sarsgaard. “I’ve been at home with my daughter for three and a half months, so I’m kind of thrilled. I’m dressed up, we’re out. Plus my movie was so tiny, we made it for nothing, so to get a nomination, I’m beyond thrilled.”
Sarsgaard beamed. “I’m always proud of her. I know she has all that in her so it’s so nice that other people see it.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal, the breakout star of 2002’s “Secretary,” got to explore her full range with six roles in 2006, including “Stranger Than Fiction,” “World Trade Center,” “The Great New Wonderful,” “Trust the Man,” and a voice part in “Monster House.”

And her star turn in the gritty low-budget film “Sherrybaby” — about a woman who returns home after serving time in prison — has garnered raves, awards from international film festivals and a Golden Globe nomination.

To top it off, she and her fiancé, actor Peter Sarsgaard, welcomed their baby girl, Ramona, three months ago.

A year of media obligations wound down with tea at a Hollywood restaurant just before the holidays, as Gyllenhaal discussed “Sherrybaby,” sex in the movies and one decidedly unwelcome side effect of childbirth.

What first attracted you to “Sherrybaby”?

The script was just extraordinarily good. It was written the way people actually behave, and I think that’s really unusual. What really appealed to me about it when I read it — and I do think I pushed this further than [director] Laurie [Collyer] had originally anticipated — I think that Sherry is in such dire straits that she doesn’t have the luxury of allowing herself to feel any kind of pain or anger. Thanks to Corey for sending us the poster for High Falls which will be used at this years Sundance Film Festival. This short film is about a man and his pregnant wife where during a weekend at a country home they tell their secrets to their best friend, jeopardizing their relationship.

E! Online reports: Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal were forced to evacuate the rustic Northern California lodge they were staying at Wednesday December 27th, when a fire broke out in the chilly early morning hours, the Marin Independent Journal reported.

The fire destroyed the main building at Manka’s Inverness Lodge, as well as the getaway’s acclaimed restaurant, but no injuries were reported from either the staff or the hotel’s dozen or so guests.

“Jake was helping me pull things out of the fire,” Daniel DeLong, who co-owns Manka’s with partner Margaret Grad, told the Journal. Read the rest of this entry »
